On the first Sunday of the Advent people here, in my region, are blowing on the traditional midwinter horn.
I’ve already written before a blogpost about the tradition of the midwinter horn, see here:
If you want to hear the typical primal sound of this midwinter horn, click here:

The idea of making a miniature midwinter horn started with this bunch of decorative poplar branches, bougt at the garden centre.

This year it was warm in July and it was then that I suddenly thought that making a miniature midwinter horn would be a nice job to do outdoors. The making of this miniature midwinter horn was quite a dusty job, because I’ve sanded namely by hand the entire shape of the horn by hand, out of a (decorative) poplar branch.

I gave the horn some layers of varnish for protection, just as they do in real life.

The mouthpiece the 'happe' (therefore is no English word available) is made of a tiny piece of cocktail stick, sanded at size for fitting into the top part of the horn. You always have to put your initals on the horn, so someone knows who the maker/owner is of this horn, I did too ;)

The midwinter horn gets some straps from rattan, or similar material. In earlier times these straps were added in order to hold together the two halves of the horn. Nowadays they use glue for it and the straps are just for decoration. The number of windings, per strap, is mostly four or five, my miniature one has five.

A rope cord, for hanging the horn against the wall after using, completes the horn.

In some regions from The Netherlands this tradition is still passed on to the next generations ;)

Wow! I would have loved to watch the process of hollowing out the tiny branch! It's incredibly delicate and astonishing how you've gotten so much detail and perfection into the piece. Wow again! :O)

Have I ever told you that you are amazing??? Oh, I did... many times... oh... okay... but so far I haven't told you that having the idea to use this lovely tradition as an inspiration for a miniature and coming up with such a stunning result is absolutely amazing!!! My, this horn is impressive... and now I understand why Schepje was exhausted, I suppose it takes a lot of practice until the sounds come out nice. Who knows... maybe we'll listen next to "Let it Snow" blown on the midwinter horn by Schepje... ;O)It's so nice that Grandpa passes the tradition along to the little ones!

Hugs

(Schaam mij diep) De hoorn is heel fraai geworden. Heel goed in verhouding.
